For many young learners, extra support can make all the difference. So, when Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan approached United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) with a vision to help students who needed it most, UWCA partnered with Birmingham City Schools (BCS) to launch the High-Dosage Tutoring Program.
This initiative provides consistent, high-quality tutoring to help students in grades 6 through 12 overcome disrupted learning and build confidence in their academic skills. The results speak for themselves: students who participate consistently outperform their peers in reading and math, and BCS now ranks first in mathematics recovery in Alabama and seventh in the nation.

Be Part of the Impact

Aleisha Dunning, Tutoring Partnership Coordinator at UWCA, oversees the program and works closely with students and schools to match tutors with the classrooms where they’re needed most. She says one of the best parts of the initiative is the variety of perspectives tutors bring.
“One of the things I love about this program is how diverse it is,” Dunning said. “We have tutors majoring in chemistry, pre-med, education, engineering — you name it. What they all have in common is a passion for giving back to their community.”
You don’t need prior teaching experience. Eligible college students must enroll in a post-secondary program and maintain at least a 3.25 GPA.
By serving as a tutor, you not only support Birmingham’s academic recovery but also gain valuable professional skills and the chance to make a lasting difference in young learners’ lives. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
