Bold Goals Launches Campaign for Summer Meals
For thousands of children in Central Alabama, the end of the school year is the beginning of a long, hungry summer. That’s because kids can depend on free or reduced-price meals at school. But summer vacation creates a big gap in meal service, putting many children at risk of literally going hungry for three months.
Having made this issue a priority, the Bold Goals Coalition of Central Alabama has been working hard for several years to END SUMMER HUNGER through a variety of strategies and collaborative efforts. To boost those efforts and make an even bigger difference for at-risk children throughout our five-county area, the Coalition is now appealing to the public to raise at least $50,000 before the end of August.
Coalition partners, including the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, YMCA of Greater Birmingham and A.G Gaston Boys & Girls Club, have leveraged federal funds and coordinated a summer meal program for the past several years. Last summer, the program provided about 1,400 meals a day. This year, the number of meal locations has been expanded to to 17 and the number of meals served is expected to double. But there are still thousands of children in our five counties who need to be fed.
- Community support through this campaign will enable the Bold Goals Coalition to expand the summer meal program and implement strategies to make it sustainable.
- Contributions to the campaign will help to more effectively END SUMMER HUNGER between the end of one school year and the start of another.
- And most importantly, donations will go directly toward ending children’s hunger, creating a healthier summer and helping them be better prepared for school in the fall.
